What are "Referrals" for Health Insurance?

Unclear whether you're talking health or dental insurance. For either, if it's an HMO plan, you must first go to your designated PCP. That doctor/dentist then refers you to a specialist - and make sure that the specialist is also "in network" for your plan. That's the way an HMO plan works, like it or not.
