Should I invest with my friend?

My friend an I were planing on opening a joint account on scottrade. I heard that business relationships with a family member or a friend are disastrous and thus foreshadow pain and agony upon all partners. Also there will be time I will be willing to make a trade but he is not available to agree. Should I invest alone.
